Fresh from announcing plans to move into the wireless Internet arena last month, Inktomi [NASDAQ:INKT] has taken the wraps off Gen3, its next-generation search engine technology. As the name implies, the technology is Inktomi's third iteration of its Web search engine crawler software, and is billed as a scaleable search index of the most highly relevant documents on the Internet. The firm said that the new architecture underpins the Inktomi search engine, which now includes 500 million documents on the Web, and provides additional scaleability to index over 1 billion documents. For the technically-minded, the new architecture is built upon the firm's Coupled Cluster and Concept Induction core technologies, which have been designed to scale while maintaining performance levels as new workstations are added.
